What We Do

The Centre for Machine Intelligence was set up the Department of Electronics and Computer Science to develop a coherent and ethical approach to research and technology transfer in the areas of Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Autonomous Systems. The Centre brings together researchers interested in both fundamental research as well as high impact applications.

 

Research 

Machine Intelligence is one of the university's strategic research themes. Highlights from our research portfolio includes:

  • Multiple Best Paper awards at top Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Conferences such as IJCAI, AAAI, and AAMAS.
  • Many of our academics are editors or associate editors of major Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Autonomous Systems journals.
  • Several Platform and Programme Grants from EPSRC in the topics of Smart Cities, Human Agent Collectives, and Big Data involving over 100 academics and researchers.
  • Multiple Innovate UK and DSTL funded projects in the areas such as ship energy management, and human collaboration with autonomous agents.
  • Strong ethos of applications driven research with high impact.

Impact 

The CMI aims to act as a catalyst for technology transfer and enterprise activities. Within the CMI, we are working with policy makers and experts from the social sciences and law to ensure that the development of machine intelligence is done in a way that benefits society at large. Impact is delivered by the CMI through:

  • The organisation of outreach events in collaboration with our partners from industry and government.
  • Public briefing events at open days and science festivals to promote machine intelligence to the wider society.
  • Promotional material including videos and social media posts to advertise the achievements of CMI members and the university at large.

How do I get involved?

We welcome  partnerships with industry and government agencies to organise events and to co-create research questions. By engaging with us, you will have access to our talent pool and have direct visibilty with our students and researchers. We support our partners through joint bids for grants for large projects or through direct consultancy for one-to-one business critical solutions.
